060602P - INTEGRATION OF THE ISLAMIC INPUT IN THE MEDICAL CURRICULUM

Paper presented at a Workshop on the Integration of Islamic Input in the Medical Curriculum held at the Faculty of Medicine Yarsi University Jakarta Indonesia on 2nd June 2006 by Dr Omar Hasan Kasule, Sr. MB ChB (MUK), MPH & DrPH (Harvard) Professor of Epidemiology and Islamic Medicine, institute of Medicine, Universiti Brunei Darussalam

ABSTRACT
The paper presents an Islamic Input Curriculum (IIC) map whose objective it to integrate Islamic teachings into the medical curriculum. IIC is divided into 5 main themes: 1. Basics (creed, ‘aqiidat; knowledge, ‘ilm; Islamic history, tarikh; & Islamic civilization, hadharat); 2. Basic Medical Sciences (life, death, health, disease, growth & senescence, perfection of structure and function). 3. Medical Jurisprudence, fiqh tibbi, including medical ethics, medical etiquette, and medico-legal aspects of illness; 4. Social aspects of medicine including transactions, mu’amalaat; justice; social institutions; and social action; 5. Formation of the physician including: self study of the Qur’an, motivation, purposes of medical education, personal development, leadership skills, and management skills. The IIC curriculum map will be the basis that will stimulate discussion and synthesis for a 1-day workshop. The purpose of the workshop will be to identify elements of the current Yarsi Islamic Input program than can be integrated directly in the medical curriculum and which can be taught in parallel in tandem with the curriculum.
