070901 - EPISTEMOLOGY OF CLASSICAL ISLAMIC DISCIPLINES

Outline for discussion at a Workshop on Epistemology held at Dhaka on September 1, 2007 by Professor Omar Hasan Kasule MB ChB (MUK), MPH (Harvard), DrPH (Harvard) Professor of Epidemiology and Islamic Medicine University Brunei and Visiting Professor of Epidemiology University Malaya

1.0 INTRODUCTION
It may seem a surprise to some that classical Islamic sciences that are based on revelation also need epistemological analysis. These sciences in their present shape have been affected by external paradigms and philosophies that have crept into them and have created epistemological biases that need correction. Besides biases, we need to reformulate the space-time dimension in these sciences by separating the constant unchangeable component from the variable component as well as formulating how the variable component can adjust to changing time and space factors.
